I started this best and worst list in January, but never got around to finishing it. So here it is, a year late.
Best movies:
5. District 9 - I actually didn't really like it, but I can't deny that it was a fantastic film!
4. Avatar - Yes it's Pocahontas, yes it's Fern Gully, Yes it's better than both, and yes it's the most visually stunning film EVER.
3. Star Trek - I almost went out and bought a car horn that played the original Star Trek theme after this movie.
2. Princess and The Frog - Made me cry more than any other movie ever, including Lilo and Stitch.
1. Sherlock Holmes - Guy, Robert, Jude, Rachel, and Mark, a dash of steampunk, and a spectacular wardrobe...Recipe for AWESOMENESS!
Disappointments:
5. Terminator Salvation - I liked it, but Christian Bale was definitely the weak link here.
4. 2012 - It was really entertaining, but way too ridiculous
3. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past - I didn't expect much, it still didn't deliver.
2. Angels and Deamons - I love Tom Hanks, but not as Robert Langdon. Dan Brown books don't
seem to make good movies.
1. Where The Wild Things Are - The monsters were awesome, the story was pointless, the kid was
WAY to old to play that part, or be acting that way, and the vocalist of
the music SUCKS! Too annoying to be a big people movie, too deep
to be a kids movie, and to quote everyone who's ever critiqued a
Michael Bay movie "Buy a tripod!"
Underrated (in no particular order):
5.17 Again - It's funny, the story is good, yeah its been done before but it was still fun!
4. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs - The monkey is funny enough to get this movie on the list.
3. Monsters VS. Aliens - Uniquely animated and hilarious.
2. The Men Who Stare at Goats - There really aren't enough feel good hippie movies
1. Whip-it - You really can't go wrong with Ellen Page. Drew Barrymore gave her most entertaining performance to date, and did a great job directing.
Overrated: (in no particular order)
5. The Lovely Bones - Ok, I'm not gonna lie, I didn't watch the whole thing, but what I saw was worthless!
4. Where the Wild Things Are - Despite all the above listed things, film snobs everywhere loved it.
3. Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasus - Heath Ledger's real last movie, Dark Knight, was phenomenal. This movie was like watching bad CGI and a lousy script throw up on a really talented cast.
2. Crazy Heart - Love Jeff Bridges, and he did a good job here, but the story wasn't worth sitting through.
1. Hurt Locker - Best picture? are you kidding? I don't even understand how this film made it out of pre-production.
Discoveries (movies not released this year, but that I discovered this year):
5. Reign Over Me - Adam Sandler was great in this movie.
4. The Green Mile - Superb!
3. Shawshank Redemption - Really Good!
2. Rocket Science - Little known, absolutely awesome film!
1. Let The Right One In - I watched this movie 3 times in one week! It is a spectacular Swedish film. The director of Cloverfield is currently working on ruining it for his american remake (update, he finished it, it's called let me it, and i probably won't ever give it a chance).
Best New Book:
The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
Best New Albums:
John Mayer - Battle Studies
The Used - Artwork
Muse - The Resistance
Fun. - Aim and Ignite
Zee Avi - Zee Avi
Worst thing that happened in 2009:
Lady Gaga
